RECAP: War of the Burning Sky, 6-7-26
Recap of Previous Events and Current Situation in Game
- The party has entered jungle ruins and encountered evidence of a second adventuring party from Seaquen tasked to prevent Sargavans from obtaining a powerful artifact called the Torch of the Burning Sky at Castle Korstull.
- The village of Eresh was influenced by a mysterious antagonist named “Balance” a Trilith (a multidimensional creature of some kind) and possibly a renegade monks’ faction.
- The party is now searching for a primary monk from the Monastery of Two Winds named Pilus, who has a “philosophical laboratory” deep in the jungle. Pilus embodies the East Wind (aggressive, first strike), while Longinus represents the West Wind (passive, defensive).
- The party freed Iresk, a lizard man druid and ally of the missing adventurers, who was tied to a stone plinth in the ruins.
- Immediate combat included battles against velociraptors (trapped then killed) and “plant hobbits,” small aggressive plant creatures wielding flint weapons. The combat is ongoing, and several plant hobbits remain alive or unconscious.
Combat and Condition Updates
- Titus used a fireball attack under a crevice in the ruins, creating smoke and destroying enemies below; no new enemies responded.
- Wraith healed Iresk with a potion of moderate healing; Iresk is recovering physically but suffers from severe cognitive confusion—the words he speaks are disconnected, nonsensical, and repeated phrases indicate a magical or neurological interference. Hypotheses include aphasia-like effects or spells preventing verbal communication and casting.
- Ono suffers a severe hangnail consequence that restricts his combat abilities temporarily; Po is temporarily deaf and cannot hear until healed.
- The party continues combat operations with a mixture of physical and magical attacks—nonlethal punches, magic missiles, and tactical positioning.
- The plant hobbits’ physiology revealed: interiors composed of plant leaves, potentially non-breathing, possibly non-living or animated plant creatures.

Aftermath of Combat
- All plant hobbit enemies are either killed or unconscious.
- Ono calls for medical aid to recover any survivors, stressing that no party member unlawfully killed enemies and wants to check on peaceful resolutions where possible.
- Some surviving plant hobbits flee once they awaken, potentially spreading tales of the party’s violence; approximately 30 creatures were encountered, with only four surviving to leave.
- Iresk declines to accompany the party further, expressing fear and anxiety about returning to the nearby castle. He prefers to head back to Eresh alone. He shows signs of recovered druidic powers but carries the mental scars from imprisonment and poisoning by underground kobolds.
Exploration and Reconnaissance
- The party debates whether to explore underground ruins further or head toward a large castle Iresk described seeing from being “borne aloft” above the jungle canopy.
- Titus and Wraith fly up approximately 120–130 feet above canopy level, spotting a large castle situated centrally within a large crater or depression. The area is eerily quiet with no signs of inhabitants or activity despite lights being visible inside the castle.

- Given the location and description, the castle is likely the one Iresk mentioned, approximately 15 miles east of their current location.
- The party Lorelai to scout the subterranean ruins where she observes a large cross-shaped room with dead kobold bodies, some possibly still alive or hiding, suggesting active threats remain.
Underground Ruins – Kobold Encounter
- The subterranean ruin is a large stone complex with intricate smaller stonework construction, containing large furniture and weapons suitable for bigger creatures than either kobolds or party members.
- The party discovers multiple traps including pits with sharpened spikes, tripwires made from vines, and bear traps arranged in combination (“double whammy”). Kobolds maintain a sophisticated trap network.
- Initial attempts at diplomacy with the trapped cobalt occupants are met with fear, hostility (“dragon spirit and his servant perceived as vengeful entities), and pleas for mercy.
- The party intimidates and demoralizes the kobolds, who drop weapons and flee into cover, eventually agreeing to peaceful interaction.
Peaceful Parley and Kobold Assistance:
- The kobolds, now referring to Titus and the party as “dragon spirit and his servants,” explain that the captive tied to the stone was delivered by a monk of the castle who called it a “failure” and left it for sacrifice.
- The responsible monk is described as female with brown hair (presumably Caela).
- The kobolds confirm the castle is roughly a day and a half’s journey east through dangerous jungle inhabited by predators and hostile tribes but claim the party’s strength as “dragon spirits” makes passage safe.
- The party is invited to see the “dead one,” a figure revered by the kobold tribe, whose tomb is located deeper in the ruins—possibly signifying the dead one as a powerful ancestral or spiritual figure to the kobold.

The Tomb of the Dead One
- The party descends into the tomb chamber containing three sarcophagi, only one of which contains a body—a human male in full armor, whose associated artifacts include a horn with inscriptions, sword, shield, and signet ring.
- The inscription on the horn reads “Vaust,” linking to the Sargavan noble family “Vaust” referenced on a border stone near the ruins.
- The sarcophagus inscriptions feature the motto “Strength Serves Honor” in Chelaxian.
- Magical auras detected in the tomb come from the sword, shield, and a ring—none of the items are of overwhelming power but have notable enchantments:

- The body is judged to have been dead for 70-90 years, but is well preserved by the tomb environment.
- A small note sewn into the cloak hem reads: “Husband, may the stars guide you where I cannot,” signed by his wife Lacroni.
- The armor and cloak are valuable, highly ornamented, and likely expensive but not magical themselves.
Sir Aldren Vaust’s Funerary Treasures
The Masterwork Sword: “Dawn’s Courtesy” A finely crafted longsword of pale steel, its fuller etched with tiny silver roses and the knightly motto: “Strength serves Honor.” The blade is exceptionally balanced, granting the normal benefits of a masterwork weapon. Once per day, when the wielder reduces a foe to 0 Hit Points, the sword may emit a warm golden glow for one minute. During this time, the wielder gains a +1 circumstance bonus to Diplomacy checks made against nobles, soldiers, or honorable opponents who witnessed the deed.

The Silver-Inlaid Shield: A heavy steel shield bearing silver filigree depicting an oak tree surrounded by seven stars—the crest of House Vaust. The shield functions as a masterwork steel shield. Three times per day, when an adjacent ally would become Frightened, the wielder may strike the shield with a gauntleted fist as a reaction. The ally immediately (PF1) eliminates the Frightened condition, or (PF2) reduces the Frightened condition by 1. The shield emits a clear bell-like note when used in this manner.

The Signet Ring: A gold signet ring set with a polished blue bloodstone engraved with the crest of House Vaust. The ring serves as legal proof of noble authority throughout the region. Once per day, the wearer may cast Prestidigitation to clean clothing, polish armor, seal correspondence with wax, or create the appearance of a freshly groomed noble. Additionally, any legitimate heraldic seal created with the ring is extraordinarily difficult to forge, requiring a very high Crafting or Forgery check.

Additional Item Found in the Sarcophagus: Knight’s Funeral Cloak: A dark blue velvet cloak preserved by funerary magic. Though not magical, it is worth a surprising amount to collectors and historians. Hidden in the hem is a stitched message from Sir Aldren’s wife: “Husband, May the stars guide you where I cannot. Lachromi”
Kobolds’ Reverence and Departure
- The kobold leader explains their tribe reveres this “dead one,” leaving offerings and sacrifices in his tomb to propitiate his spirit.
- The kobolds ask if they have done enough to earn the party’s blessings and protection; the party affirms and grants blessings, alleviating kobold fears.
- The leader offers to rename the tribe in honor of the “dragon spirit” (the party’s emissaries). The tribe adopts the name “Bateem” after the party’s self-designation “B Team.”

- The party rests at the ruins, with the lobolds offering a feast in their honor (though the party claims they only “eat ambrosia and mana,” declining the kobolds’ less than wholesome fare).
- The session ends with the party celebrated by the newly integrated kobold tribe as significant allies who may shape the tribe’s future.

- Advanced use of magic for reconnaissance (clairvoyance, detect magic), healing, and enchantment nullifying exemplify party preparedness and versatility.
- The party’s generosity and diplomacy turn a potential hostile confrontation into an alliance, showing the importance of social checks and narrative consequence.
- The “B team” designation becomes an in-world tribal identity, cementing their narrative significance.
The sarcophagus opened to reveal a long-dead man, strangely desiccated below the jungle humidity. Po stepped forward and examined what little exposed flesh was still visible. He touched the dark, papery flesh, rubbed his thumbs together, then stepped back.
