AI+Human RECAP: War of the Burning Sky, 9-21-25

The Battle of Gallofend

  1. After the party conducted their commando raids behind enemy lines, including:
  2. Just before dawn, Field Marshal Malkan’s remaining siege engines (mostly jumped up ballistae, considering the damage to the catapult batteries) begin pelting Duke Gallo’s vanguard, commanded by Captain Hertiage.
    1. Across the Alydi pass, Gallo’s artillery responds, at greater distance but with more volume.
  3. Dawn arrives, and King Steppengard’s heavy foot marches into the oval-shaped battleground, moving quickly to challenge Hertiage’s vanguard and, one assumes, reduce Duke Gallo’s resistance quickly and efficiently. .
  4. Hertiage rises to the occasion and moves forward to meet Malkan’s forces head on, maneuvering his two larger companies deftly against Malkan’s three “Stonehosts”
    1. The Stonehost is the traditional dwarven term for a field army. which can number from the dozens to the thousands. It can draw from every clan and hold under the Stonehost’s ruler, and is typically commanded by a council of thanes beneath the war-duke or field marshal. The name comes from the belief that when dwarves march together, they move as a single mountain — unshakable and enduring.
  5. Malkan’s forces engage, maneuvering the fill the gap between the two large crevasses, and battle is properly joined.
    1. Malkan’s ballistae, now sighted in, begin to deliver more damage to Hertiage’s lines. Casualties begin to mount.
  6. In response, Hertiage commands Gallo’s forces to give ground, prompting Malkan to bring the King’s soldiers deeper into the oval to continue capitalizing on the terrain and the artillery. In response:
    1. Gallo’s siege engines redouble their efforts, having sighted in the space where Malkan’s forces had now entered.
    2. The worrisome cavalry, under Lord Dashogan and containing elements from both his and Lady Timor’s retinues, enters the battlefield from the east, and turns toward Malkan’s undefended left flank.
    3. The cryosphinxes, defanged by the party, do not  attack and the cavalry charge crosses the terrain unmolested and at speed. Despite some elements turning and fixing spears to meet the charge, the cavalry charge crushes into Malkan’s left flank.
  7. The allied cavalry overruns the King’s flank, and squeezes the heavy foot westward; at the same time, Hertiage presses the King’s vanguard, compressing the King’s forces further.
    1. Within the King’s ranks, the heavily armored infantry is pushed westward, toward the Gap and into the Duke’s artillery range, where they find their maneuverability increasingly limited and their vulnerability to catapult stones exacerabated.
    2. It is likely that, at this point, Malkan has realized the mistake of using the crevasses to protect his flanks, as they are now aiding the Duke Gallo in squeezing the King’s forces. Trumpets begin sounding withdrawal, although the ability to comply with that order is compromised, largely due to the cavalry attack.
  8. Hertiage takes advantage of the cavalry’s success, withdrawing his right company to form a moving reserve while pressing with his left, further compressing the King’s lines.
    1. Mlakan’s trumpets are now sounding a general withdrawal, and the King’s ballistae have ceased fire.
  9. Malkan’s forces conduct an orderly retreat behind their siege lines (such as they are). Casualties are about 400 dwarves, to the Duke’s 150 or so.
  10. Hertiage does not retreat to previous lines but maintains position, although he allows Malkan’s forces to withdraw without chase.
  11. Lady Timor’s primary forces – two flights of flying warmages – overflies the remaining siege lines and eliminate the ballistae, effectively neutering the last of the King’s artillery options.
  12. Immediately after, Hertiage’s forces take the earthworks and stop upon them.
  13. The battle effectively ends.
  14. One hour later, a delegation emerges from the King’s lines. They declare their intention to cease hostilities on behalf of the King, and to discuss terms.

After the battle, the party is ceremoniously rewarded with masterwork mountain horses by Duke Gallow, enhancing their skills and status.

“You came to these mountains as strangers, and now you stand before me as kin of stone and steel. Few outsiders have shed blood for dwarves and lived to see honor returned—but you have, and by the forge, I will not see such valor unrewarded. These steeds are no mere beasts, but mountain-bred companions, tempered by wind and ice as we are tempered by hammer and anvil. May their hooves carry you as surely as the mountain bears us, and may their saddles remind you that dwarf-gratitude is as enduring as granite. Take them, ride them well, and let all who see you remember—you are friends of the Duke, and the high mountains themselves bear you witness.”

Four horses were awarded that night:

The rest of the party will get their horses the next evening. Gallo also provided each with a sigil to affix to their tabards:

“I trust that after whatever takes place in Bresk, you will probably return to your native Seaguen, and continue your adventures outside of the Bandu Hills. However, I want to make sure that, if should you ever return to these mountains – my lands, or the Bandu Hills in general – I want you to bear this on your livery.”

“This is my symbol and on it those runes speak to that you have accompanied me my forces in battle and that that battle was victorious. This would serve as a pass a free free passage across my lands if you ever are challenged and will prove you to any dwarves. Dwarves everywhere will be able to read this and they will know that you are a friend of dwarves and doughty warriors. So wear this on your livery if you will. It would be a great honor to me if you you would see to it.”

As they travel to Bresk, they encounter political tension, subtle hostilities, and public celebrations marking the fragile peace. Steppengard addressed the crowd, embracing Gallo who stood at his side:

“My people,” began Steppengard, “recent times have been dark for our country.

From tragedy that befell my house to recent rumors of sedition, no one can say that these have been good days. But I am here to tell you, better days are ahead! I have invited all of Bandu’s Lords and Ladies here to Bresk, so that the petty squabbling may be brought to an end, and that we may forge a new, brighter future together.

“Duke Gallo, long-respected defender of the Alydi Pass, I commend you for your brave and steady heart. Though we disagreed, and though our swords crossed because of it, I know now that you acted with only love for your homeland. I have called you and your fellow Lords and Ladies here to bring an end to our struggle. There is news, both to believe heavy shoulders and to chill marrow, but because of heroes like you, Duke Gallo, and the brave warriors who attend you, our nation will survive.

“I welcome you into my house, and offer you, as I have with all the other nobles, a chance to have your champions compete in the Tournament of Unity. Tomorrow there will be games to cheer the heart of our subjects, and in the evening we shall speak of unpleasant but necessary Thieves and tricksters lurk at our borders, I now know, and it will fall to all of us, not as Eight Lands but allied as one nation, to defeat them.”

Upon arrival, they stay at the manor of Earl Narean Barrelborn, a wealthy and well-guarded noble, where they receive hospitality but also learn troubling rumors about unusual activities at the king’s castle involving priests and mysterious casks being transported into the sewers. A disguised informant, Pixis—an assassin previously encountered by the group—reveals that she is being hunted by the Sargavans and shares intelligence about suspicious movements around the royal vault and the sewers.

The group debates the implications of this information, suspecting a deeper conspiracy, possibly involving the Sargavans and the king’s court. However, immediate investigation is delayed due to the upcoming festivities in Bresk. The party participates in a series of festival skill challenges, showcasing their diverse abilities in performance, combat, and arcane dueling, earning magical rewards and solidifying their reputation.

The session ended with anticipation for the next steps in uncovering the hidden threats within the kingdom and continuing their adventure.
