Mirabilis System
|Tonight, all of you are in the Mirabilis system – a bit far afield from the usual circuit for some of you but, for several, Emex has gotten you a potential new posting after you mustered out from whatever situation you were in previously. He’s a good drone and patrón, affable and helpful, and his fees aren’t the usual reaming that you have heard people in similar circumstances talk about in the spaceport bars and Cluster employment offices you’ve been frequenting lately. Mirabilis, formally know as Omnicron 2 Eridani, or “40 Eridani” colloquially. 40 Eridani is a triple star system in the constellation of Eridanus, approximately 17 light-years from the Sol. The primary star of the system, designated 40 Eridani A, formally named Keid from the traditional name for the system, is orbited by a binary pair whose two components are designated 40 Eridani B and C. 40 Eridani A is a main-sequence dwarf of spectral type K1, 40 Eridani B is a 9th magnitude white dwarf of spectral type DA4, and 40 Eridani C is an 11th magnitude red dwarf flare star of spectral type M4.5e. When component B was a main-sequence star, it is thought to have been the most massive member of the system, but ejected most of its mass before it became a white dwarf. B and C orbit each other approximately 400 AU from the primary star, A.Their orbit has a semimajor axis of 35 AU (which is the approximate average distance between B and C) and is rather elliptical (eccentricity 0.410).
The planetary sequence at Mirabilis looks like this:
Short version: you have a scary-close gas giant to the primary sun A, with an earthlike hidden behind it, shadowed from the giant from Erindai A. However, the primary standard is at a distant 2.8ish AU from Eridani A, protected from stellar emissions by a nearby gas giant but extremely cold nevertheless. It is primary a space-based culture.
Mirabilis is the home system of Famille Spofulam, among other corporations. It is firmly loyal to the Terran Confederation.
The main planet in the system is Gamma, called “Mirabilis Prima.” Because of it’s proximity to Mirabilis (less than 1 au), and small size, the surface temperature on Prima is very hot, near enough to boil water… but not quite. The temperature does not vary much from the standard 90C, and so is able to host a wide variety of life suited to such climates. This also means, however, that the vast majority of humans on Prima live underground – Mirabilis Prima is non-tectonic, and subsequently nearly the entire planet is riddled with underground human habitat. The surface is studded with entry points, but otherwise left to the native flora and fauna, some of which is quite dangerous. Humans can breathe the atmosphere, but must have some sort of heat-protective garments for trips on the surface longer than 10 minutes or so.
Mirabilis Zeta, the other standard planet, is known as Garabaldi, but at nearly 3 au distance from Mirabilis is very cold. It has a population of several thousand, mostly engaged in mining and refining. They, like the denizens of Prima, are underground dwellers. It’s small moon, Re, is generally ignored.
Mirabilis Eta, known as Adagio, is a barren world as well, but serves as the technogical center of the Mirabilis System. There are several large Orbitals around Adagio, housing personnel engaging in both pure and corporate research. Similarly, there are several large arcologies on the planet surface, connected to and by an subsurface “city,” a goods and services center catering to the arcologies. Eta has three satellites: Eta-A and Eta-B are small, barren, and ignored; Eta-C is larger, but also barren. However, Eta-C is home to a Mind, named “Walk Into Light.”
Adagio is the primary commercial center of Mirabilis System. Prima, by contrast, while having significant commercial activity of it’s own, serves the system more as the primary location of system humaniti.
Other Planets:
Mirabilis Alpha, known as Tegressa, is a barren, superheated rock. A cadre of approximately 600 scientific personnel live on the dark side, conducting research in metallurgy, semiconductors, and similar areas. A significant portion of them are La Famille employees (perhaps 45% percent), the rest members of various corporate, academic and government research organizations. Any researcher is welcome, providing they pay their own way (not cheap, considering the conditions). Shuttle traffic is bi-weekly, directed from Prima Traffic Control.
Mirabilis Beta, known as Livourno, is a large gas giant, one of the two within an au of Mirabilis Prima, and so is one of the primary sources of fuel for the system. Several refinery orbitals are stationed in geosyncronous above Livourno, connected to elevator tethers. Traffic is continual, both planetary, interplanetary and interstellar, jumping from vectors above the ecliptic (buoys mark the jump-safe zone), and controlled locally. The Famille orbitals are Bennatava Orbital and Ricci Orbital. There are several other orbitals, gathering and refining fuel and monitoring out-system traffic from the jump-safe zone.
Mirabilis Delta, known as Secundo, is a barren world with no atmosphere. However, approximately 60,000 personnel work in the mining/refining concern. Secundo, like Prima, is non-tectonic, and the personnel live both in orbit (transport), on surface (refining) and underground (mining).
Mirabilis Epsilon, known as Cinqeterra, is the second gas giant within an au of Prima, and is very similar to Livourno; orbitals taking and refining fuel, traffic moving the fuel around and out of the system. The primary Famille orbital at Cinqeterra is Capo. Cinqeterra is different from Livourno in that it has three technical satellites. Ep-A is not a satellite per se; rather it is a collection of mutually gravitic asteroids, the remains of an unstable mass torn apart by Cinqeterra’s gravitational pull. Most of the satellites (there are over 50 large ones, and several hundred under 1 km is size) are between 2 and 6 km in rough diameter, and primarily iron core, and are all part of the mining concern. Ep-B is a small barren moon, 50 miles in diameter, and is generally ignored. Ep-C, known as Tica, is by far Cinqeterra’s largest moon (1,200 diameter), but is similarly barren. Tica’s meager mineral wealth has been effectively mined out, and subsequently Tica is used as the system’s dumping ground, and contains several hundred billion tons of chemical, radioactive, biological and mine waste from the system.
Mirabilis Theta, Iota, Kappa: The further reaches of Mirabilis System are dominated by three gas giants, increasing in size as the distance from Mirabilis increases. These outsystem planets have a total population of around 20,000, populating a number of worlds. Fuel is plentiful and cheap, and the materials for ship construction are similarly plentiful, so the outsystem volume is near filled to brimming with small shuttles and pinnaces. Statistically, there is a interplanetary vessel of at least 40 tons for every 22 individuals; the vast majority are small vessels, although several dozen large shipping vessels ply the system trade. There are also several large, scrap-heap orbitals around each gas giant.
Theta, Iota and Kappa are known collectively as the “Three Sisters”: Maria, Renata, and Elisa.
Theta B, known as “La Trattoria,” is extraordinarily blessed for an outsystem world: for one, it is tectonic, and Maria’s gravitational pull is sufficient to produce active vulcanism. Secondly, it has a nitrox atmosphere. These combined produce a fairly warm, human habitable planet. In fact, the temperatures are warm enough and stable enough (La Trattoria has no axial rotation, so gravitation and subsequent vulcanism varies little over time) to grow food crops. La Trattoria serves as the primary agricultural source for the system: a wide variety of crops are grown continually (stable temperatures means no growing “season”) and related agroproducts manufactured and either exported or kept. In addition, continual research is being done, with approximately 5% of all plots testing new strains and hybrids at any one time.
Theta C, known as “Gabbana,” is a barren rock with good mineral wealth. It provides raw materials for outsystem manufacturing concerns, and supports a large cadre of miners.
Iota B, known as “Feni,” has large deposits of radioactives, and serves as one of the two main power generation plants for the outsystem worlds. While the insystem worlds can rely on Mirabilis herself to provide most of their fusion needs, Mirabilis is too far from the Three Sisters to generate power. The technicians on Feni mine the radioactives (primarily plutonium and einsteinium isotopes), refine them, and process them in the giant fusion reactors. The power generated is either stored in large capacitor batteries for transfer by ship, or tightbeamed through a satellite collector-transmitter network enveloping the outer worlds.
Kappa A, known as “Dolza,” is a clan world, populated by members of a single extended family, the Dolza. The Dolza are highly skilled metallurgical craftsmen, and they manufacture metal and stone goods of high quality, which are sold throughout the system.
Kappa B, known as “Bellini,” is a barren rock with good mineral wealth. It provides raw materials for outsystem manufacturing concerns, and supports a large cadre of miners.
Kappa C, known as “Torregrossa,” has large deposits of radioactives, and serves as one of the two main power generation plants for the outsystem worlds. While the insystem worlds can rely on Mirabilis herself to provide most of their fusion needs, Mirabilis is too far from the Three Sisters to generate power. The technicians on Torregrossa mine the radioactives (primarily plutonium and einsteinium isotopes), refine them, and process them in the giant fusion reactors. The power generated is either stored in large capacitor batteries for transfer by ship, or tightbeamed through a satellite collector-transmitter network enveloping the outer worlds.
Kappa E, known as “Dinatale,” is a clan world, populated by members of a single extended family, the Dinatale. The Dinatale are highly skilled electronics craftsmen, and they manufacture high quality electronics, which are sold throughout the system.
Kappa F, known as “Positano,” is a barren rock with good mineral wealth. It provides raw materials for outsystem manufacturing concerns, and supports a large cadre of miners.
Kappa G, known as “Vespucci,” was previously a mining world, but has over time had its mineral wealth exhausted. Subsequently, Vespucci has become the primary residence of the mining cadres as they rotate through the various sites. As would be expected, Vespucci has a bordertown feel to it.
Kappa H, known as “Isidro,” has large deposits of radioactives, which power a large fusion array. But unlike Feni and Torregrossa, the power generated here is used is used locally. Isidro houses one of the two large shipyards in the Three Sisters volume. About 40% of the new ship construction for the system is keeled on Isidro.
Lambda, known as “Venora,” is a winter world, with mean temperatures several dozen degrees below 0C. Venora has some tectonics, and this provides some heat energy, but typically the atmosphere on Venora is bitter if breathable. Unprotected humans will freeze in five to 10 minutes on the surface. The mean temperature does not, however, keep Venora from being the primary system shipyard. A downsite connected by tethers to a large orbital ring constitutes the yard, which keels 60% of the system’s tonnage.
