RECAP: War of the Burning Sky, 7-5-26

Titus is flying and visible near Wraith, who is invisible and also flying but inside the castle structure. Titus does not have invisibility but flies around scouting the castle which appears strange due to the absence of furniture, people, and typical light sources like fire or candles. The light emanates oddly from “everywhere and nowhere” in the rooms.

Wraith investigates further and touches the castle’s main door, triggering an illusion: the castle disappears and Wraith falls into what resembles a crystalline cavern or “ant room,” where three other creatures reside. Thanks to his Fly spell, Wraith avoids injury and reports back on his discovery.

  • A ghostly woman exhibiting chill energy but no undead aura.
  • A smaller, hunched male with a streamlined head and big nose.
  • A small male with a huge bulbous head covered in magical floating book pages, some swirling independently.

The air circulation in the chamber is strong and vortex-like, producing substantial wind from within, potentially affecting ranged attacks.

The party discusses the threat posed by the fall into the crater (about 25 feet), which would cause minor damage and may result in injury if someone lands awkwardly on abundant stalagmites that cover the floor. Strategies to safely descend include the use of Featherfall or Fly spells. The guardians appear to be protecting the doorway, which has a double door exit. Ranged members consider attacking from a safe position, but the winds and magical effects could complicate accuracy. Vondrum offers to cast Featherfall, which can cover multiple targets within a range if they stay close together, making a simultaneous safe descent possible. The party prepares for a coordinated approach, balancing the need to avoid damage during the drop with offensive tactics against the guardians below.

  • Illusions require physical interaction for will saves to discern reality.
  • Featherfall lasts 1 round per caster level and can affect up to one medium or small target per level in a 20-foot radius.
  • Guardians have no obvious ranged weaponry; the bulbous-headed one’s magical pages might grant ranged attacks.

Wraith’s perception check reveals concern about the strong swirling wind within the cavern — its unpredictable source and the challenge it may pose. Due to the party’s limited ranged weapon users outside Wraith’s arrows, tactical planning focuses heavily on careful descent and careful engagement.

The party begins moving toward the illusory castle’s façade and preparing Featherfall. Titus tests the illusion by touching the castle’s outer surface; his will save succeeds, causing the illusion to disappear for him and revealing the cavern below.

Visual description of the castle illusion and underlying cavern is provided:

  • The castle has six crystalline square roofs that are translucent but cloudy and impede vision into the rooms.
  • A taller crystalline tower with a see-through roof resembling an observatory dome is visible.
  • The cavern underneath is bottle-shaped with a neck leading to a wider chamber below, resembling an ancient granary or storage pit.

The group at the crater’s edge observes the scene:

  • The cavern floor is strewn with numerous stalagmites.
  • The three guardians occupy distinct positions; the ghostly woman stands by the double doors, the small hunched guardian moves about near the pit center, and the bulbous-headed creature is surrounded by swirling magical pages.

Detailed descriptions of the guardians’ appearances:

GuardianDescriptionNotes
WomanGhostly, with floating hair and robes; feet float above groundChill aura; not undead
Small Hunched ManElf-like features, cloaked, with dust-like particles swirling near himNo obvious undead traits
Bulbous-HeadedSmall humanoid, large head with veins; covered in magical book pages swirling and flittingPages radiate magic

Players discuss positioning and tactics. The tiger summon targeting the bulbous-headed guardian is planned, with an intent to push or grapple him into a pit. The cavern floor has open areas surrounded by hazardous stalagmites, requiring precise movement.

Combat begins as the party engages the three guardians:

  • The bulbous-headed guardian (the “big brain guy”) is attacked by Wraith’s arrows, causing significant damage but no blood—only gusts of air.
  • The magical pages swirling around him intensify, creating difficult terrain and imposing penalties on ranged attacks (-4).
  • The bulbous-headed guardian retaliates with supernatural daggers (“Whirling Knives”) targeting Wraith and Vondram.
  • Black tentacles materialize from the ground, grappling party members Po and others, complicating combat with battlefield control effects.

Po casts Web to entangle the smaller guardian, partially restraining him, though the ghostly woman escapes by turning fully gaseous, making her incorporeal but retaining shape. Po becomes grappled by the tentacles but fails concentration to dispel, remaining trapped. The tentacles squeeze each affected character, inflicting damage and limiting movement and attacks. Wraith strategically maintains altitude (~10 ft) to avoid being grappled. Ono enters prone after a failed Fortitude save against the gusting wind near the bulbous-headed guardian, who attempts to cast spells but is hindered by the grappling tentacles.

Arendar maneuvers for attacks and casts spells with a summoned tiger assisting in the melee. The tiger uses its multiple attack routine, including grab, to pin a guardian near a pit, threatening to throw him in. The tiger’s combined attacks cause substantial damage and grapple checks. The tentacles squeeze the giant aura-headed foe, who is visibly bleeding air instead of blood and appears to be fading rapidly under sustained damage. The ghostly woman uses Searing Light but misses a crucial ranged touch attack on Titus. She then moves to block the double doors, switching between gaseous and corporeal form while emitting haunting wails. Po attacks the partly gaseous woman, inflicting damage; she responds with a mournful, piercing sound resembling a breathy scream without clear words, suggesting a tragic or altered state rather than aggressive malice. Arendar delivers a critical blow with the falcata, severing the woman’s arm, silencing her moaning wail as she collapses in front of the double doors. The summoned tiger commences combat against the bulbous-headed guardian, grappling and mauling him effectively, preventing escape and control over the battlefield.

Po and others stealthily approach the double doors. Po investigates for traps and finds none; the doors open easily, revealing a pristine, white-stone interior contrasting the dank cavern outside. The interior beyond the doors is a vast, clean chamber paved with white stone, featuring crystalline roofs angling to admit ambient illumination. The area includes:

  • Pillars supporting catwalks and balconies about 15 feet above floor level.
  • Numerous vats filled with an opaque green liquid (capacity to hold persons).
  • A large pool with the same greenish fluid dominates one area.
  • Ornate walls carved with wind and storm motifs.

Stepping on certain stairs triggers a significant chain lightning trap that targets all party members in the area, resulting in mixed Reflex saves and substantial electrical damage to some. Upon careful observation, five vats are identified as containing humanoid or creature-like forms submerged in fluid, but the liquid’s opacity prevents clear identification. Further vats in the northern section are larger, holding visibly larger beings, one roughly dwarfish in form and continuing to move slowly beneath the liquid surface.

Titus flies over the largest pool and spies a massive creature resembling an enormous manatee or crocodilian amphibian roughly 20 feet long, with a head about 5 by 4 feet in size. It watches Titus intently from submerged position.

Suddenly, near the large pool, a strange event unfolds: a disembodied object splashes in the water, followed by the emergence of an enormous crocodilian-like creature with tentacles (“mind flare” type), which rises and speaks in a reptilian language, addressing an unseen master. The large tentacled crocodilian monster slithers out of the pool and moves cautiously toward the party’s general area, its size capable of toppling vats.

The session closes with mounting tension due to the approaching colossal creature — described as having a very “punchable” face by the party — setting a cliffhanger for the next session.

Key Insights and Conclusions

  • The illusion concealing the castle is dispelled by physical interaction; party members must prepare for environmental hazards such as the 25-foot fall and stalagmite coverage.
  • The three guardians are tragic remnants of a former party, transformed into magical entities guarding the entrance. Their unnatural conditions create eerie combat effects such as air gusts replacing blood and magic-infused artifacts.
  • Party tactics carefully combine environmental control spells (Web, Black Tentacles), summonings, and coordinated assaults to manage difficult foes and the hazardous chamber setting.
  • The laboratory behind the cavernary door presents an expansive, pristine environment contrasting the outside jungle and crater, filled with mysterious vats holding mutated forms and guarded by arcane traps (chain lightning).
  • Discovery of the large tentacled crocodilian heralds an escalation of conflict and points toward further mysteries involving the fate of Pilus’s philosophical laboratory.
  • The narrative mixes exploration, combat strategy, and investigation, building toward a confrontation with a powerful monstrous entity.
