Gene Wolfe died on April 14
Up until about six months ago, I knew *of* Wolfe but I had never read any of his work. My friend Eric recommended him, so I bought the kindle omnibus and have been working my way through it intermittently. Good stuff. Learned a couple things – he was an Illinois guy, and he invented the frying process by which Pringles are made.
High praise too: ‘Although Mr. Wolfe never broke into the literary mainstream, he was among the most revered science-fiction writers of his generation, adored by critics and peers such as Neil Gaiman, who once called him “possibly the finest living American writer”; Ursula K. Le Guin, who dubbed him “our Melville”; and George R.R. Martin, who described Mr. Wolfe as “one of the best our genre has ever produced”.’
